Red Devil (Central America cichlid)
About 1.4MB small vid clip, another Small Clip of fry
Red Devils are very aggressive cichlids. (Please don't judge the red devil by that picture, it really is a terrible example, they're much better looking, will have other pictures soon). It usually grows to a size of 12" as an adult. Temperature range should be 72-80F. It is carnivorous, a piscivourous fish so you don't want to keep it with beautiful cute little fish. As far as the pH, they like it a little bit alkaline. It's scientific name is Cichlasoma labiatum. The red devil is many times confused with the Midas Cichlid which is Cichlasoma citrinellum. Supposedly, Cichlasoma zaliosum is the most aggressive of these three. Also, some people confuse it with the Red Terror (festae), which has nicer coloring. The red devil is a pale orange to bright red. As juveniles they are on the yellowish side. A lot of people will say you need a 90gallon aquarium for a red devil. Usually you'll here it's impossible to breed red devils except in large ponds or pools. I personally have seen red devils of about five or 6" in size breed in a crowded aquarium at a fish store. (I bought half the fry for a dollar.) We'll be posting a lot more information on the red devil cichlid. By the way, talking from personal experience, you really have to experience red devil fry, these little babies love to eat, even when they're only 5mm long they go crazy when they see me and they know I'm going to feed them. Kind of cool to let them nibble on your finger too. They're nothing like guppy fry, but then these are cichlids we're talking about. HERE"S a PICTURE of my BABY RED DEVILS. Couple months old...
