Here's my tank stand on my current 55g. How it's set up is really simple -- just get a bunch of blocks and stack them at each end of where the aquarium is going to be. Then line where the aquarium edges are going to be with 2x4s, then simply set the tank on top making sure that the entire edge of the tank is on 2x4. You don't have to fasten the 2x4s at all because the weight of the full aquarium holds them in place. Then my wife made a skirting for the outside.
Couple of notes: 2x4s are strong enough that you don't need a center stack of blocks, just stretch the 2x4 all the way from end to end it it holds easily. This is a 48" tank, if you have a longer one you may want to support it in the center too.
Pictures were taken about 6 months ago; you can see Barnes, my pet Red Devil, stalking around. Barnes is now slightly over double that size, and sure has a lot of personality!
BTW this stand setup is about 9-1/2 years old with the same 2x4s.
