Sorry, just noticed your post was stuck in the moderation queue. You can breed just about anything that isn't too big to maneuver ok, so even 6 to 12" pairs...its more important to have clean water at the right specs/temp etc, ie the right environment versus just tank size, of course if you're thinking of housing the resulting fry and growing them in the same tank that's another story. Personally I'd stick with convicts, firemouths or various african cichlids in a 40gallon tank, that way you can have more fish in there instead of just two fish only, male/female of the bigger species...
