Clownfish Genetics

I had an interesting thought the other day...it went something like this.

People are now able to regularly breed clownfish in captivity now, right? Why hasn't someone tried to breed clownfish in water of gradually lower specific gravity? They would adapt, wouldn't they? I mean if you dropped the specific gravity by .01 each generation, after a little more than 20 generations, you would have clownfish that not only survive, but breed in fresh water! Is there something about the biology of fish that I don't understand, or is this something that, given enough time, could work?

Its an interesting thought to say the least.really your talking about evolution(to some degree?)

I think even without dropping the s.g every generation you will be supprised as to how tollerant they will be.?

won't work that way, I breed my clowns and you have no idea how touchy they are, I have to keep my water at exactly 80 degrees and SG at 1.025. If this changes even slightly they will stop. Clowns are the easiest to breed but breeding saltwater is REALLY sensitive to water quality.
It's very hard to keep them breeding a lot of time's clowns will breed if you get the lighting and moon light cycle right, if not they will stop. Also even putting them in a high traffic area will cause them to stop.
My clowns breed like crazy but they are in a 28 bow all by themselves, in a corner that has almost no traffic unless someone wants to look at them.

yep, a lot of breeders get away without but I find it much easier if I do a 14 hour main light period with simulated sunset and sunrise. Then have the moonlight on for the other time, I make sure the moonlight is a little stronger(seems they like a full moon).
Not saying this is the only way, it just works for me, but you can see how sensitive saltwater is. It's easy to keep saltwater, not easy to breed them.

Wow, I reallized they were sensitive, but never that much so.

Still, after they become "domesticated" the way some freshwater fish have, might that eventually become a possibility? Its just one of those interesting random, useless thoughts that I had.

most of the breeding fish now adays are quite a few generations into being tank raised, so ya they have become hardier but still tough to breed.

junior how do you get simulated sunrise and sunset?....do you use timers and dimmers??
ive often hated the sudden switching on of lights,seems to shock most fish.

actinics first then the main lights, I start the actinics 30min before the main lights turn on. Yes everything is on timers I don't touch any of my lighting systems on any of my tanks.
